Chapter 17

The next day, Sam couldn’t stop humming happily to himself as he restocked the bar. Deirdre gave him an odd look but said nothing, just like she hadn’t mentioned the fight. Sam had no idea what had happened to the pimp or if the police had got involved and he did not care. He didn’t want to know. He suspected Deirdre wasn’t above disposing of dead bodies and if there was anything he needed to know, she would tell him. Other than that, he was happy to forget about the whole thing. The night had ended on a far happier note.

He knew he was acting like someone who had just got lucky the night before and that was certainly what it felt like. Deirdre was probably confused because she had assumed he had been getting lucky with Tally every night for weeks now. He felt mean for not telling his friend everything, but it wasn’t only his business to tell. Tally had a right to privacy. Even though he seemed utterly shameless.

Sam grinned at that thought and glanced over at Tally, practicing with Felix. He had to tear his gaze away before he just stood and stared for the whole session. He was by no means an expert, but even he could tell that Tally had a natural grace that was going to make him an amazing performer.

Sam spun off into a daydream about them living happily together as a real couple. Tally performing regularly with the crowd drooling over him but unable to touch him because only Sam got to do that. A booming business and a blissful domestic life. Sam grinned. It was all possible.

Deirdre headed off to the cellar as Sam opened up another box of bottled beers. He was just about to start humming again, when a low ominous growl reverberated throughout the bar. Startled, he glanced up just in time to see something emerge from the shadows at the far, unlit end of the room.

It sort of looked like a dog, except it seemed to be made of shadows and its eyes glowed red, like molten pools of lava. Its teeth looked viciously sharp, and it was the size of a bear.

Sam froze to the spot, his mind unable to comprehend what his eyes were telling it. He watched Felix see the thing and frown, crossing his arms. Tally spun around to see what he was looking at and then paled before standing tall and saying,

“Zacam salman.”

The dog thing closed its enormous jaws and vanished. Sam blinked several times.

“What did you say to it?” asked Felix calmly, as if they were discussing something as ordinary as the weather.

“Go home.” answered Tally.

“What was it?”

“A hellhound, looking for me because I escaped,” explained Tally, equally calm. As if he too thought it was no big deal.

Sam ran over to the stage. Large parts of his mind just could not process what he had just seen, let alone the implications of it. But he could grasp a threat to Tally, and that was what his mind was focusing on.
